Zstandard is a fast compression algorithm providing high compression ratios and backed by an extremely fast decoder. It offers a wide range of configurable speed/compression trade-offs, allowing tuning from fast modes (using --fast=#) to high-compression modes. Decompression speed remains consistently high across all levels.

A key feature is its dictionary compression mode, specifically designed for small data. By training Zstandard on sample data, you create a dictionary that dramatically improves compression ratios for similar small files or records, often while increasing compression and decompression speeds for those datasets.

Key benefits include:

  • Excellent compression ratios.
  • Very fast compression and blazing-fast decompression.
  • Flexible tuning of speed versus compression strength.
  • Highly effective small data compression via dictionaries.

The library is open source (BSD license), and the format is stable (RFC 8878).
